Who are IronyPlugins.Com?
We are a charitable institution, founded in
1996, devoted to ensuring that standards of English comprehension are maximised
throughout the World Wide Web.
Our research revealed what many had previously
suspected, and reported informally - certain web users were
incapable
of recognising, let alone using, irony or sarcasm. Problems associated
with this included:
-
inability to appreciate humour more complex
than Benny Hill or Adam Sandler comedies;
-
difficulty distinguishing between emails and
websites satirising other people's beliefs, and emails and websites that
actually promote those beliefs;
-
fundamentalist religious beliefs and political
naivety;
-
general stupidity.
What do we provide?
IronyPlugins.Com provide free downloads
of our irony-recognition plugins, for Internet Explorer v3.0 or higher,
and Netscape v4.0 or higher. With these plugins the user is aided in recognising
certain linguistic elements.
How do the plugins work?
After installation and setup, text in every
web page you visit will be scanned by the artificial intelligence routines
contained within IronyPlugin. The program then automatically highlights
ironic and sarcastic phrases, or paragraphs involving irony or sarcasm.
See the screenshot
on this site for an illustration of how IronyPlugin will look.
See the on-line user manual for more instructions,
including how to automatically suspend scanning based on user location.
New features in v1.6
-
A warning tone sounds if the site you are
visiting is identified as being satirical or parodic, preventing
you from getting unnecessarily annoyed. A different tone will sound should
the site be a pastiche, and a pop-up window will appear explaining the
difference.
-
To aid comprehension and avoid unnecessary
offence, the plugin offers an smiley option, which adds :) at the
end of each sarcastic sentence that you might possibly think is offensive,
in the manner recommended by all reputable web conduct guides and practised
by American bulletin board posters.
-
Similarly, the "not" option adds the
word "Not!" at the end of all sarcastic sentences, to emphasise the fact
that they are not, actually, true.
-
The spelling-it-out option rephrases
the entire paragraph to remove any possible confusion due to irony or sarcasm.
Warning:
use of this option may remove all humour from a document, or indeed all
content whatsoever.

Bug
update
Since
the last release the following bugs have been noted:

occasional failure to distinguish hypocrisy from an ironic situation
-
giving an incorrect "satire" rating to many non-satirical sites belonging
to Christian fundamentalists and right-wing political groups (e.g. http://www.nra.org/) |
